Meet the Team

The success of Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary is only made possible because of the hard work and dedication of the volunteers who work within the charity.

The success of Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary is only made possible due to the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers who work within the charity. We are open 365 days a year from 8am to 6pm and take in approximately 6000 animals into our care every year. We pride ourselves in ensuring that as much money as possible raised goes towards caring for the animals and to do this we rely on the help of volunteers every day.

Our team consists of:

SITE MANAGER – In charge of the overall running of the charity, funding, the administration, paying the many bills, organising the on-site volunteers and the day-to-day running of the hospital is Alexandra Farmer (charity founder)

SITE SUPERVISORS – Every day we have one member of staff on to look after the site, volunteers and animals.  Staff are also responsible for taking calls and giving advice, organising rescues, admitting new patients, triage and assessment, record keeping, administering medications, liaising with vets, and ensuring all animals on site are fed, watered and cleaned daily. They are Alison Lawton, Marie Foy and Andrew Geelan.

VETS – Our chosen Veterinary Surgeons are The Beck Veterinary Practice.

WILDLIFE VOLUNTEERS – We also have a team of over 170 volunteers who help on site attending to the animals, carrying out rescues and transport of wildlife to the sanctuary, working in the charity and fundraising.

CHARITY SHOP VOLUNTEERS – Our shop on Haggersgate is now closed and we are relocating to a new shop in Whitby town centre. Watch this space for further details. Our dedicated team of charity shop volunteers are now rennovating the new shop and sorting stock. The volunteers also sell items online the Facebook Whitby Wildlife Online Shop.

TRUSTEES – The trustees of the charity are responsible for ensuring the charity keeps to its aims, complies with our governing document and charitable law set by the charity commission, manages the charity’s finances and resources, appoints and oversees staff, acts in the charity’s best interest and ensures its accountable. They are: Mark Smith – Trustee & Treasurer, Laurie Farmer – Trustee, Chairman & HR, Carole Hardwick, Jennifer Law, Catherine Law and Sam Taylor – Trustee & Secretary.

We are always in need of more fully trained, experienced volunteers to be able to give the professional care necessary to rehabilitate nearly 6000 casualties every year. If you are interested in becoming a member of our team, take a look at the ‘Getting Involved’ page for more information.
